243 : Money

Was talking to a friend and the topic of money came up..

He mentioned that he "met up" a Singaporean that was filthy rich. The Singaporean had a bungalow in Sydney but my friend only had a house, all my friend's versace shirts were considered casual wear, how all his branded goods were so easily overshadowed by the Singaporean. Buying branded goods with a snap of a finger, bracelets over few thousand, top line branded clothes from head to toe, yet he still complained about how the Singaporean was richer then him..

I was just speechless..

Besides the exception of jeans and a dress shirt, I don't own a single pair of clothing more than rm200. Most of my clothes which i wear often are from reject shop. I'm not fishing for sympathy or labeling myself as 'poor' but isn't spending few thousand at one go on clothing at the age of 19 a little too much?..

Maybe it's just the way I was brought up by my mum. The money given to me by my parents are not exactly mine but 'borrowed' from them, in the future i would pay them back when they are too weak to work. That's just the way i think.. During this winter break too, as much as i love to fly home like everyone else, i really don't want to incur additional cost onto my parents. Been finding a job too to lessen the financial burden.

Not saying that it's wrong to be spending your money at will but i just don't feel right spending my parent's money like that, what rights do i have to be spending money for myself when my parents are trying to save as much money as possible?

So far i set a goal for myself. By the age of 25(Yes, again 25. Most goals are set there cause it seems most achievable..), i want to earn enough money and buy suits and blazers at will so i can wear formal everyday! Provided my job can pay for it of course.. Formal wear fetish gone too far?

Maybe my opinions on spending money so freely would change if i had the money. People are all different i guess, some influenced by their higher society, some by the fashion industry, but so far i am happy seeing the digits in my bank account. :D

Happy saving!
Leonut

  1. Aiks, I don't even own a blazer nor suits. Perhaps it's not really "mandatory" in my industry.

    Heheh...

So, back to you 19 year old friend...hmm...perhaps it's his destiny to know the Singaporean guy.

    :)

  2. haha i think most teens would just wanna look cool and fit in with their peers and wear whatever that is in trend.. like one time i noticed everyone was wearing checkered shirts, before that it was just horizontal stripes.. and polo T's seem to be in most of the time. Also some teens wear those super LaLa clothes that u can just tell they are so young and lack personal taste :P
The average person won't be able to afford the high end stuff anyway.. Personally I love discovering cheap clothes that look clean and chic. Currently i'm very much into vintage Ts.. as in new clothes that are made to look old/faded.. Also wearing mostly plains now, coz I think printed words and images is getting a bit kiddy.. Many shades of grey and also.. some pop colours like neon blue or green when u feel like brightening it up your day haha..

I think i talk too much sometimes :P

  4. Formal wear everyday? I wish you dont get bored.. be careful for what you wish for... lollllz

erm~ perhaps its like the trend nowadays... kids 17-18, wearing branded stuff, etc. rich parents so spend like crazy, I even heard one 17 yld said this "its only 200 bucks, there is no thinking involve, either you buy or you dont!" I hope he would be that decisive when he comes to life...

dont worry, as far as I read... you are... pretty safe... keep it up, money, they can build, they can destroy... =)

  5. OMG, I only have one suit for graduation and that's it. Why must buy brand if you can buy something that suits you best. It's you wearing the clothings after all not the clothings wear you. But then again, everyone has something they really adore that makes other people left puzzled.

    1. Lol, that's why people tailor their suits. My dad says la.. Why wear people's brands when a suit is your brand. :D

      What do you adore?. :P

  6. if he really keeps spending like that, I wonder how it will be when he starts working..unless he get a super damn big pay, it sure gonna be hard to sustain such living....

even if u got the money, I dont think it will change anything since u know what it feel like not having enough money before

  7. your friend certainly has a high standard of living..versace shirts as casual. i wonder what brand is not casual for him? lol. it sure wont be easy when he's done studying..

when you start earning, you would spend like mad at start, but as it goes, you would think twice. besides, its more important you feel great in what you wear may it be branded or not.

  8. Appreciate what you have! Relax, your time will come. By your 30s, you should be earning enough to splurge occasionally.

  9. I'd recommend getting a nice suit early. Try getting a good one when you're on vacation back to Malaysia or when visiting Singapore. Good suits might be more affordable there

You'll definitely need it for presentation assessments, internship interviews, the internship itself, job-hunting, attending formal events, and of course graduation.

So get one early before you need it.
